Family Friday

Books take on added value when parents and children make their own books or share planned experiences related to books they've read. Here are some possibilities and benefits of extending books.

Artsy Thursday

We express the value we place on children's art by displaying their artwork. Mounting finger-painting pictures on coordinated construction paper and arranging them in a balanced display make children's art look like the true works of art they are. Children can create their own museum. Supply real picture frames or frames made from construction paper or poster board. Let each child decide which piece of art to frame. Display the artwork in a designated area of the room or in the hallway. Rotate artwork periodically as other works of art are completed.

On this Work Together Wednesday, help children develop math skills by sorting. With support, children can develop several different categories or rules for their grouping activities. Rocks might be sorted by size, type, texture. Coins might be sorted by type or year minted. Pantry items can be sorted by color, content, size. Tupperware drawers can be organized and stacked by size and/or lids. By working together with your child, you can foster their emerging math skills and get your kitchen organized at the same time!

Tasty Tuesday

Cooking with children provides opportunities for families to share foods that are distinctive to their culture and family traditions. Cooking activities can be simple like mixing margarine with green food coloring to make green eggs and ham, to melting cheese and adding chopped tomatoes for queso to enjoy with tortilla chips. Whatever you choose to make with your young child will have numerous learning experiences built in!
